John V, "The company has a strong family feeling..."
I’ve been working at DSD for a month now and have settled in quickly! I came straight from University, and had hardly experienced Engineering in the outside world, so I was expecting to feel in over my head to begin with. However, the people at DSD were incredibly welcoming and accommodating. As someone explained it to me when I started, when DSD look at graduates, they’re not looking for experienced Engineers, they’re looking for good Engineers that they can train to be great Engineers! The company has a really strong family feeling, and people here are never afraid to give or ask for help from each other.I work in the Test and Development side of the business, taking transmissions of all types from big companies and running them through their paces on specially built rigs that we design, build, program and run ourselves. This complete control over the rigs leads to unrivalled flexibility for the company, and ensures we get the most interesting and complex challenges from our clients, leading to an infinitely varied work environment.I spend about 80% of my time away from my desk actually working on something physical, which is fantastic. In addition to this, the company emphasises personal ownership of projects, with each team member operating as both an Engineer and Project Manager. DSD don’t treat graduates like kids, as many graduate schemes at other companies do, you’re treated as a real asset to the company and an equal team member right from the start.I’ve rented a flat right in the centre of Leamington Spa, a short 20min walk from DSD. Leamington is a beautiful town, with a river running through the centre that’s bordered on both sides by a continuous stretch of green parkland. This, combined with the abundance of upmarket shops, cafes and restaurants and the close proximity of both Warwick and Coventry leads to a busy, metropolitan feel in the town centre, but with quiet residential areas surrounded by greenery.I highly recommend working DSD, the open-plan office, weekly team updates and supportive family atmosphere leads everyone to work hard for each other and the company as whole. The company is expanding every year and there’s a real sense of excitement here at where DSD is heading.
Andy C, "DSD is an incredibly rewarding and unique place to start a career..."
Having previously completed an industrial placement year with DSD whilst studying at university, I recognised that DSD would be an incredibly rewarding and unique place to start my career as a professional engineer after graduating. Having returned, I now work in a friendly, highly knowledgeable and importantly, social design department.By working in a consultancy, I have already gained significant knowledge and skills in a variety of areas relating to the design and analysis of transmission and driveline systems. Projects I have worked on so far include designing a concept single-speed EV transmission for a Tier 1 customer and conducting a number of NVH studies on a variety of gearboxes. In addition to developing my technical abilities I am also regularly exposed to project management and business development aspects of the company which is helping me to develop as a better, well-rounded engineer. With this, I regularly manage a number of my own projects for which I am responsible for, aiming to meet the customer’s expectations and ensure that the project remains profitable for DSD as a business. This has also given me the opportunity to travel and visit customers at their own sites around Europe. There are very few other engineering companies offering such a wealth of opportunities to develop in the industry such that DSD does!Having started back at DSD I primarily wanted to live somewhere with a short commute and where I could build a good social life. This lead me to settle in Leamington Spa as I knew a number of others from DSD also lived in the area. Living in Leamington has given me plenty of opportunities to enjoy the towns nightlife and local activities including watching local premiership rugby matches. A number of us from DSD also play 5-a-side-style football every Monday night at a local all-weather pitch, adding to the social working environment. For all of the reasons mentioned I feel I have been able to, and will continue to thrive at DSD and I’m excited to work for them over the coming years!
Iain F, "Working for DSD has been great..."
I work on a wide range of technical problems in the design department, ranging from troubleshooting issues with existing designs to generating ideas from a clean sheet. I get to apply a lot of the skills I’ve picked up from university and previous jobs and have my input feed directly into solutions and be implemented far faster than what I’ve experienced in the past. It’s definitely the most flexible and responsive company I’ve had the pleasure of working for.In the less than 6 months that I’ve worked with DSD, I’ve been given responsibility for the technical content and day to day management of three projects, where I am interacting directly with clients and making sure that the projects deliver on time and to the customer’s expectations based on DSD’s reputation for high quality work. I have defined packaging space in complex CAD assemblies, run multi-body simulations of park-lock mechanisms, made modifications to casings to incorporate additional features, and I’ve redesigned gear micro-geometries to improve durability. As for the location: I moved to Leamington a couple months after I started, so I haven’t been in the area for long, but so far it’s great. I walk to work every day, I’m close to the shops, restaurants, parks and other amenities, and the town itself has a lot going on without being crowded or impersonal. One other thing, making new friends has been easy because the people here at DSD are genuinely like a family. I’ve felt included from day one; invited to socialise outside work hours, whether by playing football on a Monday night, meeting up for a pub quiz or having a BBQ on the weekend. It’s probably the best thing about working here.
